How reading this makes you accept Evolution and Climate Change (sort of)

An inescapable connection prompts humankind’s tacit but utter acquiescence to science.

By now many of us may be all too familiar with how anti-science sentiments such as the denial of Evolution, of Climate Change, or the Anti-vaxxing hysteria keep winning over the hearts and minds of society. Using the word “Society” here of course is just a gentle way to keep the embarrassment at arm’s length that it’s really just us. What’s strange though is that in the meanwhile, not for a second do we cease to be a part of the natural World; the one that is governed by the very laws of physics, chemistry, biology, et al.

So how come so many of us can get away with science denial yet be completely fine and dandy within their own lives? (Which in turn totally takes place in the real World.)

As it happened, the parts of the physical world that we’ve directly engaged with have come totally intuitive to us all along our history as a species. So much so in fact, that they have come as automatic to us right from the get-go. In other words, however ridiculously intricate might be the science behind every single step we take as we’re walking, we never actually had to do the underlying math to plan them out deliberately.

Just try to imagine how different the World would be if we were to think our way through every minute detail of our motion. Hey, we probably wouldn’t be alive to make this argument in the first place!

Putting it plainly, the conditions that governed the earlier history of our species simply didn’t make it possible for us to be contemplative of anything really. But now in the modern World, we tend more and more to have the luxury to stop and dwell on more complex problems. We simply can just afford it by now!

That said, nothing seems to save us from the ultimate irony of it all, that is merely by virtue of staying alive, we implicitly embrace science ourselves. See, by now, almost everyone uses a cellphone and the Internet ceaselessly, among them a lot of folks who happen to refuse science by-and-large.

Now why on earth would they do that? Can it be that they keep on using their phones because time after time they just kept on working thus being a reliable means for long-distance communication?

Well, I suppose the answer to that is an emphatic yes. Which of course takes you as close as you’ve probably ever gotten not just merely to subscribe to science but actually to be living by it.

Now notice how the very same principles that make cellphones work (or the Internet for that matter) also enable a plethora of other devices. Among them the ones that have been generating overwhelming evidence in support of Evolution and Climate Change.

So it seems that every time anti-science folks are having a chat over the phone or using the Internet, they contradict themselves by circumstance. Also the very fact that even when the most steadfast deniers of science keep using their phones en masse means that the debate is over. Scientific consensus is reached!

Yay!!?

It seems that science-deniers are still left with one way out of all this quandary: they can still meet up to have the conversation in person so that they don’t have to use the telephone.

But hold on for a second here!

As Steven Pinker put it, as soon as we’re using language to persuade one another of why you should do or believe something, we’re already committed to reason. Meaning that you’ve lost any argument you might have against reason by signing on to it whether you like it or not.
In fact, in the absence of all that, your most compelling argument essentially boils down to:

“Believe in eternal love and forgiveness or I cut your #&@#!$ head off!”
