From Europe with Love: Go Vote America!

In Europe, we have a periodic history of finding out how the worst possible answer to social anxiety is electing a bully.

Please, please go vote on November 8th!

Look, coming from a poor Eastern European country myself, I can understand the way economic anxiety, a plummeting social status, and just general sense of hopelessness can make you angry. And sometimes you just want to tear the whole damn system apart.

I understand all that.

But please trust me on this one: in Europe we have a proven track record of electing bullies to channel our anger when times are rough. Problem is it never EVER works out well.

And it’s not just your future. It’s also ours and everyone else’s too.

See what happened over here in Europe in the last few years is that a string of rotten bodies cropped up from the graveyard of political history. And partly out of escapism I admit, this made follow U.S. politics.

And the beat kept going on over here: the Greek financial crisis continued, then there was Russian aggression in the Crimea, terrorist attacks here and there across Europe, then came the refugee crisis, Russian aggression again this time in Syria, followed by an even worse chapter in the refugee crisis, and threats from Putin himself.

And if you thought that somehow all these made Europeans nicer and smarter, you’d be wrong.

But you... You were there for me throughout all those difficult moments.

Then came Donald Trump and ruined it all for me. So by the time Brexit came about, I started to feel myself in a double bind.

And it’s not like we can return to our own affairs anytime soon. Next year promises nothing good. Elections are coming up in Germany, France, and the Netherlands, and none of them seems to be in a particularly good shape nowadays.

So where am I supposed to turn for escapism if you fall?

Canada?

Please don’t make me do that.
